| For many years, the Brewster Volunteer Fire
Department operated as a village fire department under control and support of the village
of Brewster. Fire protection was provided to the Town of Southeast Fire Protection
District under contract between the Town of Southeast and the Village of Brewster. The
Brewster Fire Department owned and operated the ambulance, billing for its services. In
the mid 1960s, development and growth of areas outside the village limits placed a
severe burden on the financial resources of the village and all parties agreed that the
creation of a joint fire district was the best solution to meet the increasing need for
fire protection within the area served by the Brewster Fire Department. The
Brewster-Southeast Joint Fire District was formed September 1, 1966 by joint resolution of
the Village of Brewster Board of Trustees and the Southeast Town Board. The village
transferred ownership of the firehouse on North Main Street, apparatus and equipment to
the fire district, along with the responsibility for ambulance services from the fire
department.

The following Fire Commissioners were appointed and
subsequently elected for terms starting January 1, 1967: Past Chiefs Charles K. Doyle,
Louis R. Prisco and John G. Prisco, local businessmen Andrew J. Durkin and Malcom T. Beal.
Charles K. Doyle was elected Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners and John W.
Leather was appointed Secretary-Treasurer replacing James P. Duffy who held the position
from September through December 1966. The increased resources available to the fire
district enabled the immediate purchase of a Mack 1000 GPM pumper and Young 85 ft.
snorkel, housed in a three bay addition constructed by the fire department and its members
in 1967. Continued development and growth necessitated the construction of a sub-station
near the school complex on route 312 in 1982.
